History
Siegel’s was founded in 1940, when Joseph (JD) Siegel (pictured over front left) bought a little trade shop from Louis Fine. JD established the shop as the premier jewelry and pawnshop in the area handling the finest pocket watches and luggage in the area. After the war, JD’s son Oscar (Ossie) (pictured above center aisle back), who peddled watches around the Midwest before the war, joined his father. Ossie, a graduate of the Univ. Of Minnesota, continued along in the business with his father until 1967. In 1979, Ossies son Jary decided to join the business and his liking for diamonds and diamond grading quickly arose. Jary became certified in Diamonds and now spends a large amount of his time buying & wholesaling diamonds for the business. Ken, another of Ossies sons, a graduate of the Univ. Of Arizona business college, came back to Cedar Rapids in Aug of 1987 to run the day to day operations. During this time, Lillian, Ossies wife even got involved with the inventory and store displays. Lillian passed away in 2005, and Ossie’s retirement came in Nov. 2006 along with his passing in Sept of 2007.
The store location has now changed three times. An urban renewal project involving the light company forced the original location to go from 2nd Ave to 3rd Ave SE. After almost 40 yrs at the 3rd Ave SE location Siegel’s purchased their building in 2005 and along came the Disaster Floods of 2008 that wiped out the entire building and inventory. A decision to keep the business going was made on June 16th. Over the next 3 weeks, Ken found the current space and scavengered all over the Midwest to find store fixtures and equipment. With an amazing effort by staff, friends, and the kind people of Cedar Rapids, Siegel’s was up and running on July 5th only 3 short weeks after the flood. Siegel’s permanent location is now at 3525 1st Ave SE. We made a deal to purchase the building using our SBA loan assistance.
